STERISAN

MATERIAL DATA SHEET

ACID BASED SANITIZER / CLEANER

DESCRIPTION:

STERISAN is a highly unusual chemical with a wide range of uses. It is an acidic detergent and steriliser in liquid form. STERISAN is colourless, odourless, safe to handle and non-toxic.

APPLICATIONS:

STERISAN is ideally suited to the Dairy and Beverage Industries where it does 3 operations in one process viz. cleaning, sterilizing and preventing Beer/Food/Milk - stone formation.

In the Dairy Industry it is the perfect answer to the cleaning problems of the Dairy Farmer. From udder sanitation through CIP cleaning of pipelines to bulk cooling tanks, to milk cans or tankers, STERISAN is the answer. In the Dairy it is ideal for CIP cleaning of road tankers, holding tanks, vats and plant equipment with the exception of pasteurisers.

In the Beverage Industry, STERISAN is used on tanks and vats, filling equipment and CIP lines.

In General applications, STERISAN is used in Restaurants and other food outlets to clean and sterilize ice cream and beverage vending machines, glasses, utensils and stainless steel equipment. All food and beverage plants including Fish Factories, Canning Plants and the Wine Industry have applications for which STERISAN would be more suitable in terms of safety, performance and economy than the commonly used chemicals.

DIRECTIONS FOR USE:

STERISAN can be used for a 3 in 1 operation. Cleaning, checking Milk/Beer stone and sterilizing.

CLEANING AND STERILIZING:

Simply Sterilizing: Where cleaning is a requirement a 1 in 200 (0.5%) solution is recommended. For sterilizing only, STERISAN can be used at a 1 in 400 (0.25%) dilution at which concentration it is totally effective against three common bacteria used in SABS specifications viz. Staphylococcus Aureus, Eshurisha Coli and Pseudomona Aeruginosa.
Due to the fact that STERISAN is effective at very low concentrations, as well as being very safe to use in all respects, it is not necessary to rinse after use, as is the case with other chemicals.

THE ADVANTAGES OF NOT RINSING ARE:

® An effective anti-bacterial residue remains, ensuring protection over a period of up to 24 hours.
® No bacteria can be re-introduced via non-sterile rinse water.
® Time, water and energy is saved.
® No more worrying in case a labourer has forgotten to rinse after cleaning.

STERISAN can be re-used. In situations where a stock solution is maintained we recommend a concentration of 1-100 (1%) since the performance may be improved while the quantity of STERISAN required to top up the solution is relative. In addition this ensures that the solution strength is always above the minimum requirements stated above.

TECHNICAL DATA:

STERISAN has undergone extensive tests prior to being offered for sale. The product is unique in that it does not contain any of the specific sterilizing compounds, which are generally in use e.g. Phenol Chlorine, QAC or Iodine all of which have various typical disadvantages. The sterilizing properties are the result of a synergistic effect between the raw materials used in the formulation. STERISAN is not bactericidal active until the pH is below 4. The effect on bacteria is to attack the cell wall by a combination of pH stress and highly concentrated wetting agent, which break the surface tension of the cell wall causing sterilization. The wetting agents are also highly effective as detergents causing excellent emulsification of proteinacious soiling.
STERISAN is particularly superior to other chemical sterilizes in the presence of organic matter. The product is based on phosphoric acid and contains anti-corrosion, chelating and sequestering agents. It can be easily titrated to monitor stock solutions.
Bactericidal Properties:
If used as directed, STERISAN is effective against a wide spectrum of gram positive and gram-negative bacteria. In tests by both SABS and AOAC methods, STERISAN exhibited a minimum of .99.9% kill against a wide range of bacterial strains including Salmonella and Microccus.
The bactericidal effectiveness of STERISAN is not affected by the presence of calcium and magnesium salts and these products are therefore highly advantageous when used with borehole water and in hard water areas. Further tests have shown the products to be reasonably effective against yeast and mould at normal concentrations. However, an increase in the contact time and in the solution strength and the temperature of the solution will have marked results. For specific test results, please request a copy of our Certificate of Analysis.

THE SAFETY OF STERISAN:

Tests were conducted with milk to determine the possible consequences of not rinsing STERISAN and the effect of excessively strong solutions, e.g., a labourer might forget that he has added the chemical once and add it again thereby doubling the strength of the solution. What would the effect on the milk be if the system is not rinsed after cleaning? What would the effect be if the system was not even drained?
If one doubled the concentration from the recommended 1/2% to 1% then added that excessive solution directly to 100lts of milk; the flavour would not be effected unless more than 2lts of solution was added. Only at 6lts to 100lts of milk would be strong acid flavour be present. At that point the pH factor would be 5.92. However, STERISAN is not bactericidal active until under pH 4, therefore the flavour of the milk would be noticeably off before any retardation of the natural growth bacteria in the milk would take place thereby affecting subsequent milk cultured products. At the normal recommended concentration of 1/2% for cleaning and sterilizing, 67lts of solution would be required in a 1,000lt tank of fresh milk before a taint would become noticeable.
This information reveals how safe STERISAN is to handle and explains why it can be used successfully as an udder sterilizer. For further information, please request a copy of the laboratory findings regarding this aspect of the product.

THE ADVANTAGES OF STERISAN:

It can perform 3 operations in 1, i.e. it will remove and prevent the build up of milk/beer/food stone while it cleans and sterilizes. Therefore only one product is required.
Because it is a liquid there is no possibility that the product will not be dissolved properly causing poor results. This is a common problem on dairy farms.
It is fully effective even in hard water of up to 500ppm CACO 3, and can be used in cold or hot water. Both of these advantages are particularly important on dairy farms.
STERISAN is also effective against yeast and moulds and is more effective than Halogen compounds in the presence of organic matter.
STERISAN does not have to be rinsed after use. This saves time, water, energy and worry - another advantage of particular value to Dairy farmers.
It exhibits a very effective anti-bacterial performance over a broad spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria and conforms to SABS specifications.
If used as directed, STERISAN will not attack or corrode any components in your production plant such as steel, stainless steel, rubber, fibreglass or metal alloys.
STERISAN is safe to handle and to use. It is colourless odourless and non-toxic. It will not cause tainting.

PACKING:

STERISAN is available in 6kg, 30kg and 240kg containers.

CAUTION:

Avoid direct contact of STERISAN with skin and eyes. Should this occur, rinse thoroughly with water. If irritation persists, consult a doctor.

BACTERICIDAL PROPERTIES OF STERISAN:

The following information has been extracted from a report of tests carried out by an independent laboratory to assess the bactericidal properties of STERISAN.
When used at the recommended concentration of 200ppm active sanitizer, or one part STERISAN to 480 parts water, it controls a wide spectrum of gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
The following was obtained on the basis of a series of laboratory tests in which high numbers (10x107/ml) of e.coli and s. aureus were killed in 30 seconds, even in 500ppm hard water, when examined in official AOAC Germicidal and Detergent Sanitizers Method. Other bactericidal stains of the Streptococcus, Pseudomona, Salmonella, Micrococcus or Aerobacter genus were also tested with equally good results, always exhibiting a minimum of 99,999% reduction of organisms.
STERISAN is also effective against yeast and moulds, but the killing rate is slightly delayed, depending on the particular type of fungal organism. Usually yeast is controlled within a shorter time (1 to 5 minutes) and moulds will require 10 to 60 minutes for their complete inactivation. By doubling the use of concentration of STERISAN and by increasing the temperature of the sanitizing solution slightly above room temperature, the inactivation time can be considerably reduced.
STERISAN solutions have been proved to provide residual anti-microbial properties. It was determined by laboratory and field data that
STERISAN sanitized surfaces with the solution drained, but not rinsed, will affect a residual sanitation over a 24-hour period.
